I was reading through my old rp logs on one of my favourite (now-defunct) MUSHes when I came upon one I logged just because a new player was being anal and really, really annoying. How annoying you ask?
Said player, after posing his turn, then asks, "Okay, whose turn is it?"
I reply, "Anyone's, we don't conform to a strict pose order in this MUSH unless it's a big scene."
Gary Stu then proceeds to get on his high horse and lecture me on the political correctness of establishing a pose order and waiting for the next person's turn. Because. Free-for-all posing. Is. Just. Not. Done.
I tell him, as politely as I can manage, "We've done that on this MUSH for as long as I can remember. And it's the case on most MUSHes I play, for the sake of getting the scene to flow naturally."
He then picks a fight with me over OOC and discourages passing players from joining the scene. "If I were you I'd just leave now." And threatens to bring my 'harassment' to the notice of the admins.
WTF.
I was pretty amused by all this afterwards, but it sure wasn't very amusing at the time. To Mr. Know-it-all Neophyte RPer, wherever you are, I hope that stick jammed up your ass bleeds you to death.

I <3 you for that. I shall now go be amused and get back to work.

On the other hand, hassling folks trying to enter the scene? Not cool.

For big scenes the games I play on usually use the '3-pose rule', which basically means that there is no strict linear pose order (because it slows things down), but you can pose again if at least three other people went after your last pose. That allows people to step away to grab a drink or whatever once in a while without holding up the entire affair.

We usually use it in battle scenes, since big social gatherings tend to break apart into smaller groups anyway and global pose order isn't an issue.

Social scenes? Bah. If I'm in a scene with 2-4 other players a pose order usually develops on its own, but it's not something we set. And it's not something anyone I currently plays with will bitch about if you go out of order. I prefer the more realistic type of social scenes where you're talking like you talk, without keeping track in your head if Bob or George or Alice have commented yet.
But pose order is one of the eternal debates. People love it or hate it and are rarely indifferent to it. I'd rather poke myself in the eye than have to use it in every scene.

This more natural feel to a scene is what I prefer in any rp that requires a lot of interaction. Of course most rpers I play with are considerate enough to adopt whatever the rest are most comfortable with given the scene. I personally don't mind having to use either style, just that I prefer one over the other, and keeping a rigid order in a casual scene with five people or less just makes me lose my patience.

You're in a restaurant, order something, the waiter brings it over, sets it down in front of you, then takes a step back.
Then they adjust the plate a few degrees one way.
Then they shift it slightly towards you.
Then they fluff up the garnish.
Then they angle the main course slightly.
Then they adjust the plate a few degrees the other way.
Then they add a bit of water to your glass.
Then they add some ice cubes.
Then they add some more water.
Then they fluff your garnish the other way.
Then th-
STOP IT!! IT WAS FINE THE FIRST TIME!!
*deep breath* But yep. Folks who do that. That's about the only time I'll chime in with "OOC Mind if I set up a pose order here?", just to get them to shut the heck up.

Instead of taking a single post consisting of three lines, they'll take three one-liners to say the exact same thing.
